Sedation

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide has been a popular means of sedation in dentistry for many years. Nitrous oxide is safe. There are virtually no serious side effects to properly administered nitrous oxide during dental visits.

There are many advantages to using nitrous oxide

• The depth of sedation can be altered at any time to increase or decrease sedation.
• There is no after effect such as a "hangover"
• Inhalation sedation is safe with no side effects on your heart or lungs
• Inhalation sedation is very effective in minimizing gagging
• It works rapidly. In as few as two to three minutes, relaxation and pain-killing properties develop.

Oral Sedation

Certain adult patients who are very apprehensive may be able to use oral sedation to calm them down during a lengthy dental procedure. Dr. Glass prescribes Triazolam (Halcion) for such patients. Triazolam is a medication that is great for dental procedures because of its fast onset of action and short half-life. The medication will make you very relaxed and sleepy, therefore you will need somebody to bring you to the office and take you home after treatment.

General Anesthesia

Very young children that require extensive dental treatment and are uncooperative may benefit from treatment under general anesthesia in a hospital setting.
