About Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is the disease of the gingiva (gums), periodontal ligaments, and the supporting bone.

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gingiva (gums).

Importance of Oral Hygiene

Without proper oral hygiene the plaque that has accumulated around your teeth and gums causes inflammation of your gums (gingivitis). If this inflammation is not treated in its early stages it will spread to the underlying bone. With time, both the gums and the bone recede, causing deep pockets to be present around your teeth. As your teeth lose their support, they become loose and need to be extracted.

The best way to prevent gum disease is effective daily brushing and flossing as well as regular professional examinations and cleanings. Unfortunately, even with the most diligent home dental care, people still can develop some form of periodontal disease. Once this disease starts, professional intervention is necessary to prevent its progress.

Scaling and Root Planing

At your check-up appointments Dr. Glass will determine how deep your pockets are.

Once you have lost certain amount of tooth support (indicated by the presence of deep pockets) scaling and root planing will be initiated to eliminate all plaque, tartar and associated inflammation from around the teeth.

Arrestin and Chlorhexidine Mouth Rinse

For more severe cases a local antibiotic will be placed within the deep pocket. Patients will also be prescribed an antibiotic mouth rinse for use at home.

Maintenance

After the initial periodontal therapy it is necessary to maintain the health of your gums and bone by having professional cleanings done on a more frequent basis (every 3-4 months).

Laser Gingival Recontouring

For patients with uneven gums, and for those patients that are receiving smile makeovers it is crucial to recontour the gingiva for most esthetic results. At Gallery Of Smiles, we use a diode laser for precision and comfort.
