For the most part, cavities in children are treated in the same way that cavities in adults are treated. Most small to medium sized cavities in primary and young permanent teeth can be restored with composite fillings. This type of filling is a tooth-colored resin material which chemically bonds to the tooth structure. Esthetically, the filling blends beautifully with the rest of your child’s natural teeth. Functionally, these “white fillings” are as strong as traditional amalgam or “silver fillings”.
For large sized cavities, occasionally the composite fillings may not be strong enough to adequately restore the tooth. If this is the case, then the alternative is to use a stainless steel crown which is cemented to the primary tooth with a special fluoride-releasing material to prevent further decay. These “silver caps” are anatomically shaped to mimick the natural shape of primary molars and allow teeth to stay as strong as possible for as long as possible. When the primary tooth is ready to fall out, the crown (still cemented to the tooth) will fall out as well.
