It is not uncommon for children and adolescents to fracture a front tooth. No matter what age, damage to the front tooth can become a serious cosmetic issue. In this situation, affected teeth are “bonded” with a composite resin material. Special care is taken to ensure that the final restoration is as natural and esthetically pleasing as possible. Like other composite fillings, bondings are chemically bonded to the remaining tooth structure. This is a strong bond, but parents should be aware that as strong as the restoration is, it can never be quite as strong as the original tooth, and care must be taken not to place undue stress on the restored teeth. Parents should also be aware that as children grow, their teeth will shift, the gums will reshape, and ultimately the tooth will require a more definitive restoration in late teen or adult years. At this stage, porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns which cover part or all of the tooth respectively will offer patients the best cosmetic solution and the most longevity in a restoration. Dr. Glass and the GALLERY OF SMILES team will be involved with the more extensive cosmetic needs of maturing patients.
